We value enthusiasm at work

Juha Pekka Ojala, Managing Director of the construction company SRV, believes in the power of inspiring projects. Enthusiasm, performance and success go hand in hand.

SRV aims to develop society through its projects. One of the company’s visions is to create the best customer experience in its industry as a constructor of urban town centres by 2020. In the midst of the current construction boom, SRV aims to increase the profile of the industry in the eyes of potential, young employees. “Millennials have different values compared to the previous generations. Work should be creative, inspiring and meaningful. Young people are a force of nature, and we have incredibly smart people entering the labour market soon,” says Ojala.

«Feedback helps us to delve into our development areas. The benchmark data of Corporate Spirit gives us a clear picture of our actual status.»

At SRV, constant improvement is part of everyday operations and the goal is to support people in their career development. SRV has cooperated with Corporate Spirit in its employee surveys since 2015. SRV uses employee surveys as a tool for development and utilises it to promote business performance and in, for instance, the rewarding policy. Each supervisor is given a personal PeoplePower® index to support their managerial work. “Feedback helps us to delve into our development areas. The benchmark data of Corporate Spirit gives us a clear picture of our actual status,” says Ojala.

The response rate in the employee survey at SRV is high, and the answers highlight engagement and commitment to the company values – one of which is Enthusiasm at work.

The response rate in the employee survey at SRV is high, and the answers highlight engagement and commitment to the company values – one of which is Enthusiasm at work. SRV employs about 1,100 people, 200 of whom are employees and the rest are experts and specialists. According to Ojala, this type of an expert organisation makes leadership an interesting challenge. SRV has drawn up general leadership principles to support its supervisors. Focusing on the principles increases enthusiasm and boosts business.

According to Ojala, leadership is an everyday duty and requires genuine enthusiasm. Leadership must stem from each supervisor’s own personality, and each of them leads with their own strengths and weaknesses. “I am the same man each day of the week and even on the ski track. A leader must be genuine and honest,” says Ojala.
